WSBK king Rea doesn’t get shot in MotoGP “a big shame” – Rossi

Northern Irishman Rea has been the conquering force of the WSBK with Kawasaki for more than half a decade, winning six titles from 2015 to 2020, while totaling more than a hundred race victories.

Rea took part in two MotoGP races in 2012 with Honda replacing injured Casey Stoner in Aragon and Misano, scoring two top eight and impressing the team.

However, despite many flirtations, a true full-time race in MotoGP never got off to Rea, who is currently engaged in an exciting battle with Yamaha’s Toprak Razgatlioglu in the WSBK for the 2021 title.

Rossi thinks it’s “a great shame” that Rea never had a good shot in MotoGP, and thinks that even now at 34, the Ulsterman could be quick in the premier class.

“This year the battle with Rea [and Razgatlioglu] is a lot of fun, very nice to follow because I think they are two great Superbike riders at their best [talent] and the battles are always good to follow, ”said Rossi.

“And I think it’s a real shame that Johnny Rea didn’t have the chance to switch to MotoGP maybe five, six years ago because I think he rides really well and he had the potential to be strong in MotoGP – but maybe also now [he could be fast]. ”

Rea and Razgatlioglu both won 11 races and recorded 25 podiums each in 2021, but two crashes in the recent Portimao round put Portimao up 24 points in the standings ahead of this weekend’s Argentina round. .

At the end of the year, Razgatlioglu – who was linked to a 2022 MotoGP seat with Petronas SRT – is expected to test a Yamaha M1, which Rossi says will be “very interesting”.

“I really like Toprak because he’s a very modern rider, he’s young, he’s very, very physically prepared,” added Rossi.

“And above all, he has excellent control of the bike. I think this is his strong point.

“He’s fast, so it’s very interesting that he’s trying the M1 because I think he can be competitive, and also that he can be competitive in MotoGP because he’s still young and has lots of potential. “
