Top Gun Racing and RC Enerson join 35-car field for Indy500

For months that was the plan, but local Indianapolis 500 fans were reluctant to trust the hopeful words of IndyCar’s newest team. Without any outside support, Top Gun Racing aimed to qualify for this year’s edition of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing with rookie RC driver Enerson, the type of entry that has often failed as the clock strikes midnight in the morning. ‘Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the month. of May.

On Wednesday, IndyCar confirmed that Top Gun Racing and co-owners Gary Trout and Bill Throckmorton will attempt to qualify for the Indy 500, unveiling this year’s Indy 500 entry list with 35 cars, Enerson included. The team’s No.75 car will run on Chevy’s power and a main sponsor yet to be determined as testing begins on May 18 and the team qualifies May 22-23.

“We think we have a really interesting dynamic going on with this team and a lot of enthusiasm for what we’re doing,” Trout told IndyStar in March. “We have a lot of people who want to participate, with brand new cars. And a driving partner that we wanted from day one.

“RC will succeed. The team will succeed. We’re going to turn some heads.

Instead, it was Dale Coyne Racing’s # 52 Honda with Rick Ware Racing that crashed at the last minute on Wednesday before the field was confirmed. Coyne officials told IndyStar that “the deals we were working on failed” in order to fill the seat with the pair’s No.51 full-season entry and Coyne’s No.18 teamed up with Vasser-Sullivan. Coyne and Ware had yet to announce a driver for the No.52, despite testing Ware’s son Cody Ware last month during the series’ open test on the IMS Oval.

Just days ago, Enerson and the team made their track debut at the Worldwide Technology Raceway to help shake up the car and upgrade it for the much larger IMS oval. Series steward Max Papis was on hand to supervise the new team and the rookie pilot.

IndyCar RC veteran Enerson will drive the # 31 Carlin Racing Chevrolet this weekend in Mid-Ohio.

In the end, two teams won’t qualify for the Indy 500 and TGR is by far the less experienced. From a drivers perspective, Enerson, for now, is one of the top three riders in the Indy 500, with Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin, who finished in 2nd place in his first oval race earlier. this month at Texas Motor Speedway, and Dale Coyne Racing with Pietro Fittipaldi of Rick Ware Racing.

Despite being an Indy 500 and IndyCar oval racing rookie, Enerson has four previous IndyCar races to his name – the most recent coming in 2019 in a single race with Carlin in Mid-Ohio, where he placed. 17th. In 2016 he made his debut in three races with Dale Coyne Racing and came away with a better finish of 9th at Watkins Glen.

In his only race of the full season at Indy Lights in 2015 with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, Enerson finished 4th overall with a victory.
