The firecrackers are back! High-octane racing returns to Sussex
Following its incredible success in 2021, The Brighton Bears award-winning annual charity event, The Big Bash, returns to Arlington Stadium near Eastbourne.
The old lady of Arlington shook her foundations last summer when huge crowds hosted the popular event again after an enforced Covid-19 break.
The event will be the Bears’ ninth charity reunion to raise vital funds for the Rockinghorse children’s charity. Considered the biggest and most respected team in the country, The Bears, based in Newhaven, attract members from across the county including Brighton, Seaford, Worthing, Burgess Hill and Crawley.
The most popular
Many of the sport’s top drivers across the UK have again generously volunteered their time to support this worthy cause. There are even a few drivers from Ireland. The strength in depth of The Bears team often sees them victorious in the Destruction Derby where the last car running is the winner.
Not only are the capacity crowd royally entertained each year, but the event raises staggering amounts for the charity. To date, over £175,000 has been raised for Rockinghorse, enabling the purchase of vital equipment for the hospital’s High Dependency Unit, Emergency Department and Trevor Mann Baby Unit.
Bears team captain Nigel Riley said: “Every family in Sussex knows someone who has benefited from the care and treatment provided by ‘The Alex’ over the many years it has been open. “Some families have seen multiple generations of children receiving hospital care.”
Michael Burnage, event organizer and Rockinghorse Ambassador, said: “It’s been great fun working with the guys from The Bears and being able to raise significant funds for the hospital. “The difference we are making as a group in the lives of young children with the new equipment we are purchasing is staggering and incredibly humbling.”
Hollie Trezise, Head of Community Events Fundraising at Rockinghorse, said: “We are looking forward to The Bears Bash again this year. It is always a very well attended event and we are very grateful to Michael and the team for their enthusiasm and hard work in making the event such a success year after year.
Rockinghorse is best known as the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and a vital supporter of the neighboring Trevor Mann Baby unit in Brighton, as well as supporting children’s centers and pediatric wards across the county.
A grand parade of drivers is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., with the first race starting at 5 p.m. The event usually runs until around 9 p.m. With the promise of an exciting evening of ‘all-in’ motor racing entertainment, spectators are advised to arrive early – and dig deep.
