LG Chem develops advanced plastic product to prevent flame spread in electric vehicle batteries

South Korea’s LG Chem has developed a new plastic product for electric vehicle batteries that can prevent battery flames from spreading, promising to deliver the world’s longest fire resistance performance. The flame retardant is capable of preventing the spread of flames, thanks to the company’s proprietary technology and manufacturing methods.

The newly created advanced flame retardant product is made from various composites including Polyphenylene Oxide (PPO) and Polyamide Resin (PA).

Thermal runaway is the primary cause of electric vehicle battery fires, where various stressors can cause heat to build up in a battery cell.

When a battery cell exceeds its temperature threshold, a fire can occur due to a short circuit triggered by factors such as overcharge and overdischarge.

Commercial production of the new product is expected to begin in 2023, in line with customer demands and schedules. The company is currently in the process of obtaining patents in Korea, the United States and certain European markets.
