From Dakar to MotoAmerica: Petrucci tears up the tracks in the United States!

Danilo Petrucci, the fastest man on two wheels, is in his second career revival in 2022, and he is nail it. He is now the fastest motorcycle racer in the United States, having avoided rally-raid last winter.

Road racing fans will of course remember Petrucci for his respectable MotoGP career, which ended in 2021 when the veteran Italian finished the season without a contract renewal (he had been with Tech3 KTM). It wasn’t that he wasn’t a great rider – as Petrucci said, he was simply too big a man to succeed in today’s world of MotoGP, which has been dominated by short Spaniards. over the past decade. Petrucci was taller, which meant he was slower, and nothing could fix that.

However, KTM loved Petrucci, and even though they had no place on their factory team for him, Mattighofen wanted to keep him, so Petrucci (somewhat surprisingly) ended up with a Dakar. It went surprisingly well, with the rookie ending up on the podium in Stage 4 and generally acquitting himself well.

So, what to do after Dakar? Challenge the FIM rally raid circuit? No, Petrucci returned to road racing, signing with MotoAmerica’s Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC. How’s it going, you ask? He won three of four races this year, winning both rounds of the COTA double-header and winning race one at Road Atlanta (a mechanical DNF ruled him out of race two).

And after? It’s hard to imagine that Petrucci won’t be up for another Dakar challenge this winter, although we haven’t heard anything confirmed yet. Or maybe he’ll try something else – after all, his background is enduro racing. Is the Erzbergrodeo next?
