Did BJP workers hand out alcohol at PM Modi’s rally in Hyderabad, Telangana? No, the viral video is misleading!
Prime Minister Modi held a rally in Hyderabad on Sunday July 3. In this context, a video has gone viral with a claim that alcohol was distributed by BJP workers in Telangana during the rally.
The ‘Vijay Sankalp Sabha’ was held at the Parade Grounds in Hyderabad and saw the attendance of over a million people, according to dispatches. The rally took place ahead of the upcoming elections in Telangana in 2023.
Lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan shared a 29-second video which garnered 10.7k likes till the time of writing. The video shows men wearing BJP scarves and caps pouring alcohol into cups held by people. The cameraman shows different people pouring alcohol into cups held by people gathered around. The viral posts claim that during the recent rally hosted by Prime Minister Modi in Hyderabad, Telangana, BJP workers distributed alcohol and snacks to entice voters to attend the rally.
The translated caption reads, “Wow Modi ji, your group also turned Telangana into Goa! What fun they are having!”
Kirti Azad, the former Lok Sabha member, also tweeted the video. The translated caption reads: “Inside, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech continues as BJP outside workers indulge in booze and kebabs, in honor of Mother India. It’ is the reality of their Hindu religion. It’s not even worth ridiculing, it’s the height of shamelessness.”
The video is viral on Facebook and Twitter with a similar claim.
Logical Indian’s fact-checking team verified the virus claim and found it misleading. The viral video is from 2021.
Looking closely at the video, we could notice two images in the lower right and left corners. The image in the lower left corner shows PM Modi while the image in the right corner shows a person who is presumably Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the state chairman of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Telangana. This visual content implies that the viral video is somehow related to the rally that took place in Hyderabad, Telangana.
To examine whether the video is actually from Telangana, we then used InVid’s keyframe analysis tool to isolate keyframes from the video. We did a reverse image search on one of the isolated keyframes, which led us to a report from The News Minute. The title of the report reads: “Andhra BJP leader promises to sell alcohol at Rs 50 if elected to office.” He talks about BJP Andhra Pradesh leader Somu Veerraju promising that the state’s BJP unit would provide cheap booze if elected to office. All of you who vote for the BJP, we will offer you cheap alcohol at Rs 75. If the income is good, we will even provide you at only Rs 50, good quality alcohol,” said Veerraju said in the report.
The report contains a tweet uploaded on December 29, 2021 by user @KakralLaddy in which similar images can be seen. The caption links the liquor distribution incident in the video to comments by BJP Andhra Pradesh leader Somu Veerraju on December 29, 2021.
We then did a keyword search with terms such as “शराब” and “भाजपा” (Alcohol and BJP) on social media and came across this tweet from Srinivas BV, the national chairman of the Indian Youth Congress . The tweet’s translated caption reads, “Inclusive Growth from Collective Efforts – Everyone’s Booze!”
The official Twitter account of the Uttar Pradesh Unity of the Indian National Congress Unity had also tweeted the video on December 20, 2021. The translated caption of the tweet reads: “Narendra Modi distributes painkiller. Is- is everything okay?”
Imran Pratapgarhi, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha also tweeted the video on December 20, 2021, which reads: “BJP is in bad shape. They distribute alcohol to mobilize the crowd.
Social media posts say the incident happened in Uttar Pradesh. We then did another keyword search to determine where the video was filmed.
We came across this report by Dainik Bhaskar published in December 2021. The report mentions Congress leaders stating that the incident took place after BJP leader JP Nadda’s rally in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
According to another LiveHindustan report released on December 20, 2021, the incident took place before the UP Assembly elections held from February to March 2022. The report also notes that no BJP leader responded to Congress’ claims. leaders in viral video.
After a keyword search on YouTube, we came across this video posted by TEN News on December 22, 2021. In the video, Youth Congress leader Srinivas BV can be heard saying that the alcohol distribution incident took place in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. His statement can be heard from 0.18 in the video. “See how in Haridwar, just to attract crowds, such a big liquor store has been established. I request the Prime Minister to identify who these people are from what they are wearing.” He then asks BJP members including Smriti Irani to speak out on the incident.
Srinivas BV refers to the rally organized by Bharatiya Janata Party Chairman JP Nadda on December 18, 2021. Details of the rally can be found in this Economic Times article.
From our fact check, we found that the video showing alcohol distribution dates back to December 20, 2021. The video resurfaced several times and was linked to comments by BJP Andhra Pradesh leader Somu Veerraju, and at the rally of BJP leader JP Nadda in Haridvar. Congress leaders said the video was filmed in Haridwar, Uttarakhand during the rally hosted by BJP Chairman JP Nadda on December 18, 2021, but there was no response from the BJP regarding this affirmation.
We have not been able to independently determine where the video was shot and when it was shot. However, we are able to affirm that the video was not filmed during the recent BJP rally held in Hyderabad, Telangana as the viral posts claim.
